The Space The Low Down: We are a quick walk (3 blocks, 5-7 minute walk) from the Georgia Avenue/Petworth metro (green and yellow lines). Our newly-renovated 1 bed/1 bath English basement apartment has all the comforts of home, including a fully equipped modern kitchen, large private bedroom, and full bathroom with glass enclosed shower. It has got everything you will need to serve as your own private city retreat, and all within minutes of some of the District's most popular spots. Whether you are looking for a place to kick up your feet after a long day of sightseeing or to rest your head after a long day of business meetings, our apartment has it all! Location, Location, Location: The apartment is located an easy three blocks from Georgia Avenue/Petworth metro on the green/yellow lines that provide direct access to U Street Corridor (U Street Cardozo - approx. 5 minutes), National Mall (Archives/Navy Memorial - approx. 11 minutes), National Airport/DCA (Ronald Reagan National Airport - approx. 22 minutes), Gallery Place/Chinatown (transfer point to the red line - approx. 10 minutes), L'Enfant Plaza (transfer point to orange/blue - approx. 13 minutes), Pentagon (approx. 19 minutes), and Nationals Stadium (Navy Yard - approx. 17 minutes). Relax: The lounge features a comfy sofa where you can sit back and enjoy the large-screen LED television equipped with an Amazon Fire Stick and DVD player, as well as access to NetFlix, Amazon, and HULU. Not in a TV mood? Feel free to enjoy our selection of DVDs, games, and/or magazines! Free wi-fi as well. Renew: The large separate bedroom features a queen bed with high-end memory foam mattress and comfy bedding, spacious closet, and small chest of drawers for extra storage. We also have a queen inflatable Aerobed if a second bed is needed. The apartment has electric baseboard heaters to keep you toasty in the winter months. And to keep you cool and comfy during the hot, humid DC summer, the apartment is equipped with a portable A/C unit. Refresh: The full private 'jack and jill' bathroom can be accessed from the living area or bedroom, and features a large pedestal sink and tiled shower with glass enclosure and custom stone pebble floor that feels like a massage on your feet. A point-of-service electric water heater means hot water when you want it (and saves on the electricity bill, as well)! To keep you cool and cozy on those hot, humid DC summers, the apartment is equipped with a portable A/C unit. If your clothes need a refresh too, the apartment has a convenient LG combo washer/dryer for your sole use. Refill: The kitchen is outfitted with soft close cabinets, deep stainless steel sink, garbage disposal, and stainless steel appliances, including dishwasher, electric glass-top range, built-in microwave, and fridge. The kitchen is equipped with just about everything you'll need during your stay (flatware, glasses, cups, plates, bowls, pots, pans, spices, cooking utensils, wine service, Brita water pitcher, etc.), as well as a toaster and coffee maker. Guests will be given a unique code to enter and exit the front door during their stay. We do ask that guests please ensure all windows and doors are closed and locked when leaving the home, be it for a trip out to explore and/or at check-out. Interaction with Guests Unless we're away, we will be living upstairs during your stay. The apartment is completely separate from our home with your own private front and back entrances/exits. You can interact with us as little or as much as you wish. We're happy to give you advice on local tourist sights, restaurants, bars, etc. The Neighborhood Petworth is a vibrant, growing community that boasts a range of bars, restaurants, and coffee shops all within a 5-10 minute walk from the apartment. They include Qualia Coffee, Homestead, Looking Glass Lounge, DC Reynolds, Reliable Tavern, The Pantry, Petworth Citizen, Himitsu, and Timber Pizza, as well as CVS Pharmacy and large Safeway supermarket and Yes!Organic Market. Looking for some history, Lincoln's Cottage at the Soldiers' Home is a mere .6 miles away from our place! Our apartment is a quick 15 minute walk from the 11th Street 'hip strip' with more dining options, such as El Chucho (Mexican), Room 11 (contemporary American), Meridian Pint (pub grub), Wonderland Ballroom (more pub grub), Red Rocks Pizza (wood-fired pizza and homemade pasta), and The Coupe (hipster restaurant/coffee bar/lounge). And just a bit further a far in Columbia Heights -- another 5 minute walk from 11th Street or just one metro stop to the south of Petworth -- you'll find more eating and shopping options, including Giant supermarket, Target, DSW, Bed Bath and Beyond, Thai Tanic II, Chipotle, Five Guys, Lou's Sports Bar, Starbucks, Cava Mediterranean, The Heights, and more. Getting around Washington, DC has a great public transport systems. The metro is a mere five minutes away by foot. You can also take any number of buses that pass nearby. Capital Bikeshare is also an option with bike kiosks dotted throughout the District. Jonathan rides to work everyday. We'd be happy to lend you a helmet. Other Things to Note Safety: We occasionally are asked about the safety of our neighborhood and the surrounds. It is difficult question to answer. It's a judgment call and one that depends on your own personal reference point. What we can say is that we have lived all over the globe -- from South America, to Asia, to Africa -- and chose to purchase our 'permanent' home in Petworth. Yes, there are safety concerns, but that is the case with any large city (which Washington, DC is). We want you to feel as comfortable in our home and neighborhood as we do, but know that comfort levels differ, so if you have more questions about safety, ask away! We'll be happy to give you our take on the neighborhood we now call home! Access/Mobility Concerns: There are several steps from the sidewalk up to the house and then another few down to the front entrance of the apartment. Also, this is an English basement and while the ceiling height is generous in the main living areas, there are a few bulkheads, particularly in the bathroom, which may prove troublesome for those who are not vertically challenged (read: over 6'2'). Noise: We live in a beautiful historic row house that still has its amazing original quarter-sawn oak floors. While the apartment ceiling is well-insulated, sound still travels -- both ways. We'll be sure not to host a disco dance party while you are staying with us, and ask that you show us the same courtesy. We've yet to encounter any ghostly friends in our historic home, so the light footsteps you may here during your stay are ours. We promise! Parking: We do not have off-street parking, but there is generally space available in front of our house. One on-street parking guest permit can be arranged during your stay. Please let us know in advance if you will require parking. We do ask that guests pay a $30.00 fully refundable deposit for the parking permit, since it is difficult to replace should it leave with one of our guests. (Fine Print: We are not responsible for tickets and/or towing for those who do not abide by street cleaning and other posted parking restrictions). Timing: Check-in is 3:00pm, check-out is 11:00am. Schedules permitting, we will try to be flexible to accommodate special requests, such as early arrival and/or late departure. Just ask and we'll do our best to accommodate! Chores: Basic cleaning supplies are provided should you wish to tidy up during your stay. On check-out we just ask that you please do your own dishes. We'll take care of the rest.
